Gulbis was born on January 7, 1983, in Sacramento,
California. Natalie's father John worked for
the Sacramento County Probation Department,
while her mother Barbara continues to act as
purchasing director for a Sacramento medical
laboratory. Natalie first hit the links at age
4, when her father began to teach her to play
golf. She soon fell in love with the sport.
At 7, she won her first tournament, and by 10,
young Natalie was already breaking par.
In 1996, 13-year-old Natalie finished in second
place in the California State Women's Amateur
tournament. The top spot went to another future
LPGA player, Dorothy Delasin. The following
year, however, Natalie came back to win the
tournament. That same year, she became the youngest
player to ever qualify for an LPGA event, playing
in the Long Drugs Challenge. Natalie would hold
this record until 2002, when 12-year-old Michelle
Wie made fresh claim to it.
Natalie Gulbis first became a golfer to watch
when, at 14, she became the youngest to qualify
for an LPGA tournament. By age 18 she was already
a professional, winning over just as many fans
with her sex appeal as with her swing.
Sacramento native Natalie Gulbis seems to have
been destined to play golf. First introduced
to the game by her father when she was only
4, Natalie's talent was readily apparent; she
won the California State Women's Amateur tournament
a mere decade later, and received a scholarship
to play collegiate golf at Arizona State when
she was only 17.
In 2005, Natalie released her second calendar.
The first annual 2004 edition was deemed "too
provocative" by the USGA, who cancelled
Natalie's signings, but it still proved to be
a very successful enterprise. Natalie has also
played on many charity and Pro-Am events, where
she has teed off against such celebrity athletes
as Roy Jones Jr., Michael Jordan and Barry Bonds
Gulbis remains in demand, but as a golfer first
and foremost.
Start asking Natalie Gulbis about the importance
of her being recognized more as a golfer now
and prepare to be interrupted. "I am a
golfer," she said. Well, yes, she is. Always
has been, since her father put a club in his
only child’s hand at age 4. Gulbis just
has more going on than most golfers.
She has a swimsuit calendar. She has a reality
show on The Golf Channel. She has a side job
writing a golf column for the men’s magazine
FHM — and posing for it, too (in swimwear).
She’s dated Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback
Ben Roethlisberger after meeting him in a pro-am.
Thirty years after Laura Baugh and Jan Stephenson
began selling more than their pictureperfect
swings, Gulbis carries that torch for an LPGA
no longer conflicted about marketing its glamor
along with the golf.
Because she has yet to win a tournament, she
has been dismissed as another Anna Kournikova,
the tennis pinup who never won a professional
singles title. The difference between them is
that Gulbis, at 23, is making progress. Meanwhile,
Kournikova, 25, has all but vanished save for
some World Team Tennis sightings.
Gulbis, in her fourth LPGA season in 2005, finished
sixth on the money list with more than $1 million.
She set a record for season earnings by a player
who didn’t win. She made the U.S. Solheim
Cup team for the first time and won three of
four matches.
She began this year by finishing in the top
five in four of her first five tournaments.
In July, she had a four-stroke lead with nine
holes to play in the Jamie Farr Owens Corning
Classic near Toledo, but Mi Hyun Kim caught
her on the final hole of regulation and beat
her in sudden death. She ranks 14 th on the
money list entering the Wendy’s Championship
at Tartan Fields Golf Club this week.
"I definitely get (the Kournikova comparisons)
a lot less," Gulbis said.
"As far as me personally, I go out every
week to win. I’m not going to be satisfied
until I do."
She said her improvement is the result of a
tighter, more consistent swing grooved while
working with Butch Harmon the past two years.
She ranks fourth on tour in greens in regulation
and second in birdies. But it’s the birdie
chances she has not converted that have cost
her victory.
"She’s gotten herself into contention,
but frankly, she needs to get the job done,"
said former LPGA player Dottie Pepper, now a
television commentator. "One of the best
nine holes of golf I’ve seen (was the
29) she opened with Sunday in Toledo, and she
had probably six chances after that to win the
golf tournament. You would think one of them
would have found the hole."
